Here is one of the scarcer RYAN ale bottles in a porter style (Russ Butler 10-140). It has major crude character with twisting stretch lines in the neck. The embossing is robust. It's priced way below what I have seen this sell for because of some rawness and (likely) manufacturing bruise on the base. In his 1998 guide (>25 years ago), Russ suggested the value at $400-500, and the estimate for an example sold in the 2015 Rusty Frye collection was $375-475.
Embossed: JOHN RYAN / 1866 / SAVANNAH / GA. // PHILADELPHIA / XXX / (5 pt. star) ALE (5 pt. star)
Color: lavender-hued cobalt blue
Height: 6 3/4"
Top: crudely applied taper
Base: smooth
Structural Condition: it has a 1/8"shallow dibbit in the lip. Also, underneath on the base it has a 3/4" "bruise" toward the heel that might not be a bruise per se because there is a strand of something in the glass and bubble features. It's probably from manufacturing. There are no radiating lines - totally stable and no major harm. There is also a 1/8" half moon toward the base below the S.
Surface Condition: it has patchy minor to moderate stain/haze. Also some areas of ground wear and high point wear - but no pitting. Since the embossing is strong, this could be greatly improved by a polish cleaning, or keep it as is for the glowy natural patina..
